Purchasing Manager
Position Summary
Newkirk Electric is seeking a full-time Purchasing Manager in its Muskegon office. This is a fast-paced environment and requires accuracy and attention to detail. Responsibilities include lead Purchasing team providing training, direction, coaching and feedback. Supervise, plan, direct, and coordinate the procurement of materials, equipment, subcontractors, and supplies. Negotiate with vendors for the purchase of materials, supplies, equipment, and services. Work directly with Project Managers for bid/job pricing of materials, equipment, subcontractors, and supplies. Ensure the cost effective and timely procurement of supplies and services.
Job Duties
- Lead a team of Purchasing agents and staff to achieve the best possible pricing and service for procured items.
- Oversee daily duties, training, and development of staff. Provide frequent coaching and feedback to staff. Maintain staff schedules to ensure appropriate department coverage.
- Interview and hire staff as necessary.
- Work directly with Project Managers for bid/job pricing of materials, equipment, subcontractors, and supplies.
- Understand and effectively communicate with construction field personnel about materials or services required, and their deadlines.
- Negotiate with vendors for the purchase of all materials, supplies, equipment, and services.
- Create, review, and submit purchase orders in a timely manner within electronic purchasing system.
- Coordinate shipping schedule with vendors.
- Manage incoming material/inventory and follow up with suppliers on delivery requirements.
- Seek out and vet new material or service vendors.
- Build and maintain positive vendor relationships.
- Troubleshoot discrepancies between purchase orders and material packers/invoice.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills including experience with accounting software (changing from Sage 300 to COINS), electronic filing software (currently Onbase), Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and any other software that may be utilized in the accounting department.
- Some knowledge of electrical materials, equipment, and procedures to be able to effectively communicate with Project Managers and Technicians regarding jobs, quotes, or billing.
