Project Overview
Newkirk was contracted by Indiana Michigan Power to remove approximately 28 miles of existing 69kV transmission line with wood pole structures and install new 138kV transmission line supported on steel structures. Newkirk crews drilled and placed temporary steel casing 4.5 feet in diameter and 15 feet deep for 368 tangent structures. The drilling crews scope also included, drilling and pouring 71 dead end pier foundations ranging from 5 to 10 feet in diameter and 20 to 58 feet in depth. A total of 2,100 cubic yards of concrete was placed over the three phases of the project.
Installation of drilled pier foundations occurred under energized 69kV transmission lines during the project to minimize total outage duration and potential risk for the customer. All Newkirk drilling crews are electrically qualified and capable of working within qualified clearance distances.
